Preciously Stoned

The Four Agreements

leave a comment »

I met up with a few friends yesterday for a girlie brunch at Shida’s Salt Peanuts.

I don’t see these girls very often, but everytime I do, we have a blast.  When more than 3 girls get together (say 5), we can make a ruckus and annoy the hell outta other people in the restaurant.

But also, I always walk away (with a smile) having learned something new. Through recommendation of Anne, I would like to share with you the Four Agreements.

The Four Agreements is a book written by Mexican writer and Shaman, Don Miguel Ángel Ruiz. Its full title is “The Four Agreements: A Guide to Personal Wisdom”.

One

Be impeccable with your word.

  • Speak with integrity.
  • Say only what you mean.
  • Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others.
  • Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Two

Don’t take anything personally.

  • Nothing others do is because of you.
  • What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream.
  • When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Three

Don’t make assumptions.

  • Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want.
  • Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama.

Four

Always do your best.

  • Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick.
  • Under any circumstances, do your best, and you will avoid self-judgement, self-abuse, and regret.

So there you have it, follow these agreements, and you will create a stress-free and all around perfect life!

Just kidding. The point is to follow these rules generally, not fanatically. As I always say, anything in extreme will eventually become bad no matter how good they are in nature. Balance is key. :)
